Final few pages…almost ready to go to print for The Silence 2!!

It’s good to be back! My first comic con in YEARS! Feels a bit surreal and nostalgic 😀 Come out to LouisvilleCon for our one day show!

In St Louis I stayed at the Angard Art Hotel which featured a local contemporary art gallery at the entrance and art throughout the building. I also visited the Contemporary Art Museum. I have a love/hate relationship with contemporary art. Some of my favorite pieces are from the modern and contemporary movements. But some of the worst excuses for art also have been created during the same time. The Contemporary Art Museum was kind of disappointing. The showings there were not that original-a huge collage installation, a collection of abstract paintings that looked like an updated version of Cezanne, and small sculptures of bent and distorted cups that could have been featured in a Dada exhibition. Contemporary Art often emphasizes it is pushing boundaries and challenges conventions. But it runs into two problems—either the art is just a re-hash of approaches taken by early 20thC artists or it resorts to pretense. Certainly you will find some truly original work but so many times you will have a stick on the ground or a banana taped to the wall or a piece of glass leaning against a post and the artist will inject this cosmic, transcendent meaning into the objects about how they represent the non-existence of time or a statement about the capitalistic rendition of relationships, or some other obtuse blah blah blah. And those trying to be a part of it all will nod their head in chorus like they have the privileged insider info while the rest of us make fun of the artist for throwing a stick on the ground and calling it art. Here is an example—one of my favorite works from the Art Museum was Placebo by Roxy Paine from 2004. It’s a large aluminum sculpture of a tree installed outside the museum in a field. It’s striking and electric and beautiful and the kind of art that stops you in your tracks. On the other hand, my least favorite was Gray Mirror by Gerhard Richter from 1991. The work is what it says—large gray mirrors. The description plate gave the work this deep meaning of blurring the boundaries of painting and photography, representation and abstraction. No—you made a gray mirror. That’s it. And people are going to look at themselves in it because we are all

While I visited St Louis, I went to the St Louis Art Museum. Art museums have an almost religious significance for me. I love spending all day contemplating the work and the artists that made them. Here are my top 5 favorites:
